IBAL results show Fermoy ‘Cleanest Town in Ireland

Fermoy town has topped the league table in the final results of the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) results.

Fermoy town has topped the league table in the final results of the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) results.

An Taisce, who carry out the surveys on behalf of IBAL, said the town had ‘exceeded its usual high standards of cleanliness’ and had said that “great care has been taken, not just with regard to litter, but also overall presentation.”

The town will be awarded a specially commissioned public sculpture in the town this year to the value of €40,000 to mark the significant achievement.

The number 1 ranking in the IBAL results has an extra special significance for the townspeople, as Fermoy native Tom Cavanagh was the man who initiated the formation of IBAL in an effort to reduce the plight of litter nationally, which was particularly rampant in the 90s.

Fermoy finished ahead of Athlone and Killarney, who were ranked 2nd and 3rd repectively, with Dublin North Inner City receiving the worst result, positioned at number 40 in the category of ‘Seriously littered’.

A delegation representing all the groups who work hard in Fermoy to keep it litter-free attended the awards ceremony which took place in Dublin on Monday.
